Photographed @ Pykara Lake, Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, India

On an extremely bright and sunshiny day I was out in a boat on the Pykara lake, a half hour drive out of Ooty. The above scene presented itself. My Nikon D80 with its kit lens could not quite handle the brightness and the photograph ended up being somewhat washed out. But when I switched it to B&W in Picasa, the effect was quite impressive.

  1. Looks nice. One alternate view is to have lesser foreground so that the horizon is in the center, this will also cutoff dark bottom RHS where details have been lost to shadow…

  2. I cropped this one keeping the rule of thirds in mind, and like the effect I got. Placing the horizon at the centre would de-emphasized the lake. Also, I would have lost the sparkling water on the left.

The black corner is a lens problem. The Nikor 28-135mm kit lens just dropped colour at the the edges! You can see some shadow on the top right corner too. Too bad.
